Brownstone on West Brookline Street

Location:
Boston, MA

A gut renovation set the stage for this design transformation of a traditionally styled 4,000-square-foot home in an 1890s brownstone. This barebones starting point offered a perfect opportunity to bring new life to a traditional space. Contemporary furnishings and accents were layered to enliven the spaces, creating a modern and fresh vibe even when rooted in classicism. The original plaster crown moldings and fireplaces were restored and made ready for their close-up to maintain some of the building's original character.

In the formal and grand living room, a regal chandelier fashioned from organically shaped rock crystals and a gilded metal frame becomes a breathtaking sculptural moment. This marriage of materials is replicated in the dining room, where a modern metal and crystal chandelier plays well with a shimmery Moire wallcovering that mirrors natural light, bringing brightness to an enclosed space.

In the primary bedroom, a vintage Murano glass chandelier sourced from Europe stages a vivid ornamental vignette in this private area. Custom millwork adds present-day vibes to the rear parlor, where the time-honored ceiling details and original fireplace dovetail effortlessly with wood wall paneling masking hidden storage and a TV.

We introduced a soft, neutral palette of earthy colors, adding a timeless and cohesive backdrop to the rooms. Strategically placed flashes of rich brass, bronze, and jewel tones throughout add a stylish shimmer, creating a home that feels both livable and luxurious.
