Contemporary Intercontinental residence
Location:
Boston, MA
Upon purchasing a corner unit overlooking Boston’s waterfront, the clients recruited Elms to help them create a light-filled nest that reflected their lifestyle and refined aesthetic. The unit had a lop-sided layout that didn’t quite meet the needs of the couple and their young daughter. The kitchen was too small to be family-friendly, so the team co-opted Jodi Geran with Downsview Kitchens to help improve the layout. Slicing a doorway to the previously closed hallway increased the unit’s flow, seamlessly connecting the kitchen, dining, and living areas.
Textures throughout create a depth of richness, from the marble counters to the high-gloss lacquer and walnut-veneer cabinetry to the Venetian-plastered ceiling. The clients liked it so much Elms extended the prime finish onto the dining area’s ceiling, punctuated with a boxed pendant and a sumptuous banquette. A wood ceiling defines the living room area, a warming counterpart to the expansive windows. The seating feels organic to the space, like the curved sofa, a circular ottoman, and swivel chairs that allow the family to take in the vistas or watch their pet chinchillas.
The office incorporates a sleeper sofa and a work-friendly desk along the entire window. In the primary bedroom, a wallcovering with a hint of metallic adds warmth, while pillows covered in a bright fabric add a splash of color. The bed faces a sleek built-in that offers endless storage and a niche for an additional television. The couple opted for his and her baths but with similar three-dimensional wall tiles in each. Both bathrooms also flaunt a neutral color theme, while his contains a glass-walled shower, and hers holds a shower and tub; both are relaxing retreats perched above the Boston waterfront.
