Back Bay Luxury Living
Location:
Boston, MA
Downsizing from a traditional home to a swank address in Boston’s Back Bay, the owners envisioned an urban residence with a more contemporary look that reflected their taste. They hired Elms to create a design with character to match the home’s spectacular views. The apartment had suffered from lackluster finishes, beige walls, and dark cabinetry. Elms introduced a clean, consistent color scheme that establishes a calming air of continuity throughout the space. An open-plan kitchen/dining/living area went from quiet to stunning with the addition of a coffered ceiling. A floor-to-ceiling hearth clad in travertine makes a perfect setting for original art and a focal point for gatherings. A quiet reading corner features wing chairs and an ottoman with a reflective metal band, giving the tranquil spot equal panache.
The kitchen features a chef’s station that adds to the overall sophistication. Under new lacquered cabinetry that climbs to the ceiling, the cache of original walnut cabinetry strikes a polite and pleasing contrast. A backsplash of reflective glass adds sparkle, and the stools—covered with graphic fabric—work equally well for pre-theater cocktails as morning coffee. Built-ins showcase the custom bed in the primary bedroom and house the owners’ pottery collection. And while the haute fabrics and furnishings look museum-worthy they’re extremely livable, so the owners, and their dog, can come and go without worry.
